18th Century Hepplewhite Mahogany Sideboard
Monumental Hepplewhite (of period) mahogany sideboard circa 1780-1820, featuring satinwood string inlay, of period brass hardware and cuffed tapered legs. Each cabinet contains individual locks operated by seperate keys. The large drawer is constructed from white pine and jointed with hand cut dovetails. The drawer bottom has been lined with a green felt (not of period). The top, side panels and legs are crafted from solid mahogany, with white pine being the secondary wood contructing the framework and interior. Limited information pertaining to its history is available, however, this item was recently acquired from an estate out of Virginia.
Condition:
The sideboard is in overall excellent condition, however there is evidence of previous repairs. The mahogany top has been reinforced from the underside in several places where some minor cracking was present. The banded inlay along the bottom edge of the sideboard and areas of the cuffed legs shows evidence of repair. There are still some minor spots where some of the banded inlay has chipped away (left side panel and several minor spots on the cuffed legs). The left side panel has evidence of repair from a previous crack along the joint. The brass hardware is likely not original to the sideboard as there is evidence of them being replaced at one point in time. However, the present hardware does appear to be of period. Some of the locks have likely been replaced. The key that is present with the sideboard only turns the left cabinet lock. Unfortunately, the locks on the other two cabinets and drawer do not have keys present. The finish is in restored condition and displays very well.
We are happy to answer any specific questions pertaining to the condition as well as send additional photos per request.
