Antique Korean Tansu Chests

$1,825.00
Sold Out

Made in the late 19th or early 20th century Korea, these matching pair of tansu chests are adorned with silver-toned metal mounts (possibly stainless steel), elm wood fronts, gold fabric lined doors and large open interiors. Each chest is a three part form consisting of a scrolled foot base, chest and removable top.

The top of each chest are most likely later additions and can be removed if preferred. The butterfly latches were missing their original pins and have been replaced. The paper lining on the interiors are in good condition considering their age. The exterior finishes have been restored however, there are still imperfections in the wood which can be expected. The most significant damage to the wood can be seen on one of the scrolled bases (as seen in photos).

On the interior of each chest (above the door opening) is a handwritten note in red ink which contains Korean characters and other markings. There is also a small cloth pocket on the interior of one of the chests (most likely used as an inconspicuous hiding spot!)

Dimensions:

29.5" Height x 36" Width x 17.5" Depth
